Abraham Fernando Carpio almost didn’t become a criminal defense attorney, even though his family expected it of him, given that his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all criminal defense attorneys too.

Instead, as a senior political science and philosophy double major at the University of Maryland, Carpio was considering pursuing a Ph.D. in philosophy and becoming a professor—until he took former UMD professor Judith Lichtenberg’s philosophy of law class.

“That class is what tipped me over the edge to go to law school,” Carpio, a 1994 graduate of the departments of government and politics and philosophy, recalled.
